With the continuous business development, the Laboratory’s hydraulic simulation scope has been expanding, and the simulation models getting more and more complicated, which raised higher and higher requirements for the computing capabilities of the simulation service platform. The original computing capabilities of State Key Laboratory of Hydroscience and Engineering (SKLHSE) can no longer satisfy the business development demands. The Lab faced tough challenges to flexibly scale the service platform’s computing capabilities for “unlimited computing capabilities” while lowering IT maintenance cost and maximizing IT value.

Business Challenges

State Key Laboratory of Hydroscience and Engineering, Tsinghua University, was established under the approval by the Ministry of Science and Technology on July 26, 2006. The Laboratory has been undertaking large quantities of hydraulic simulation computing projects, building up the hydraulic simulation computing service platform, and providing technical support for China’s water resources utilization, river regulation, hydraulic development and watershed management. In addition, the Laboratory is also responsible for R&D cooperation and academic communication with domestic and international institutions, and thus also has a relatively high requirement for courseware sharing.


With the continuous business development, the Laboratory’s hydraulic simulation scope has been expanding, and the simulation models getting more and more complicated, which raised higher and higher requirements for the computing capabilities of the simulation service platform. The original computing capabilities can no longer satisfy the existing business development demands. Besides, as a scientific institution, the Laboratory also has high requirement on data security and disaster recovery and backup.


The Lab faced tough challenges to flexibly scale the service platform’s computing capabilities for “unlimited computing capabilities” while lowering IT maintenance cost and maximizing IT value. It is a quite common challenge for many R&D institutions in development.


The conventional approach is to expand the platform’s computing capabilities through purchasing new equipment. But it needs quite a lot of capital investment, but still cannot well solve the conflict with dynamic scalability requirements.  Azure’s real-time dynamic scalability and flexible deployment fit well with the Laboratory’s current business demands.


Azure operated by 21Vianet became a competitive option for the Laboratory.


Solutions

After comparison and investigation, the Laboratory finally chose Azure operated by 21Vianet to deploy their projects in a flexible and resilient way as well as project monitoring and management.


During the early stage of deployment, a professional operation team from 21Vianet conducted all-round tests on the Laboratory’s existing computing platform including performance test, architectural test and guidance. The 21Vianet team found that the restrictions by computing nodes of the Laboratory makes it unable to satisfy the system’s computing demands, or guarantee thorough system scalability testing if adopted the conventional approach. After identifying the business challenges and demands, 21Vianet designed a tailored cloud service solution on Azure for the Laboratory.


Azure can virtually deploy unlimited number of virtual machines, and dynamically allocate IT resources based on the Laboratory’s simulation computing demands. After adopting Azure cloud services, the Laboratory doesn’t need to purchase expensive hardware to satisfy the requirements of the system’s dynamic scalability. What’s more, it can create HPC computing clusters with thousands of computing nodes based on the actual computing demands of the Laboratory, reducing hardware equipment maintenance and upgrading cost as well as saving space. Azure charges by the unit of minute, which can save costs and be more environmental-friendly for such research institutes with dynamic simulation computing demands.
